Small Companies & Google Adsense is the future
I was poking around alexa today http://www.alexa.com/site/ds/top_sites?cc=CA&ts_mode=country&lang=none and saw that Plentyoffish is now a top 30 site In Canada ahead of all other dating sites. http://ranking.websearch.com/SiteInfo.aspx?url=plentyoffish.com (Ask.com's toolbar network) puts me in the top 43 most viewed sites on the web. In the bigger picture Plentyoffish.com is neck in neck with yahoo personals and still a ways behind match.com. It amazes me to think that my 1 person company is able to compete at a level where all the competitors have 600+ servers, and 300+ full time staff. I feel like I am ahead of my time, and when I look around at the companies out there today I have a hard time seeing them existing in a few years. I believe that in a few years 2 or 3 person companies will replace companies that have 40 or 50 employees.
I sometimes wonder if i'm crazy for not going paid, and passing up 100's of millions a year in revenue. But i created this site to change the world, and make money at the same time. I may not make $20 million a month like the other sites my size but google pays me good money :) My effective CPM (under $1.00) may be very very low, but when you have a site this huge it really ads up. (My girlfriend is holding up the cheque, its for 2 months as googles EFT bounced.)

The check picture is a real treat, it will inspire 10,000 others to get checks which are less than $50. 10 of them will get to where you are, and the other 9,990 will wonder how you did it. Only the 10 can live your life, but giving the other 9,990 the dream enables them to keep chasing it — a kind of happiness and freedom I don’t think folks had 20 years ago.
cheers!
June 9, 2006 at 2:14 am
You have no idea how much I identify with that. As another one-man company, I sure hope you are right about the future. The cheque is simply super powerful in reaffirming my effort.

Of course this is gross, not net. Obviously with the kind of traffic it takes to generate that revenue there must be some pretty significant hosting fees subtracting from this, right?
June 9, 2006 at 4:42 am

Hello Markus
Congrats on your success. However you are leaving a lot of money out of the picture because you have not got adsense in enough places on your site. You should optimize the adsense placement and you will double your revenue. I believe your site visitors would not hold it against you if more adsense ads where placed on your site as it is still free. You should give it a shot, you will see I am right. Then you can post a photo of a check 2 times that big.

The obvious way is to create something free, which people love and flock to in their droves, and just sit and wait for Google, Yahoo, AOL or MSN to buy you. But apparently you can make shit loads of cash even before someone buys you. I had no idea how potentially lucrative signing up with Google Adsense was. See this. The guy runs PlentyOfFish.com, a free online dating site. It’s very no frills. It doesn’t offer what many of the pay dating sites like match.com does, and it has nowhere near the coolness factor of the best free ones such as consumating.com or okcupid.com. But right-click on the image of the cheque and you can see that in two months he has earned CA$ 901,733.84. He earns $10,000 a day by doing virtually nothing. PlentyOfFish.com pretends to be part of the Online Dating Industry. Technically speaking, PlentyofFish.com makes money off the ads upselling to other sites. It has all free users (the daters) and some paying clients (the advertisers)! It drains money from the Internet Ads Industry
and not from daters/subscribers!

View the bigger size (make your wallpaper or poster) and read the story in DigitalPoint forum. Shoemoney said that it can be accomplished by hosting and maintaining a very good, one site only. Can you believe this? ONE SITE ONLY can generate hundred thousand USD with adsense ONLY!!! Keep in mind that Shoemoney has many sites and type of revenue generators. But what about Markus of plentyoffish.com? With ONLY one successful site, he received this adsense check, CAD $901,773.84 (Canada dollar) for two months. Read the story here. He said that currently there are a lot of competitions in this social networking/dating field. It is very interesting to see the stability and sustainability of the income. Well, you have seen the real check lol! Except they superimposed/photoshoped those pictures, you should start believing it. So what is the moral of the story? I try to find the similarities. Let say you already seo-ed your site(s) properly, white-hat-ly, following the Google webmaster guidelines religiously but still fail to generate even 10 bucks daily or you have many sites but the accumulated income still can’t pass the 10 buck daily. [...] I am not going to explain how to make money using Google AdSense. Here I just put a real world example: a successful web enterprenur got a check from Google. Guess how big is the check: almost 1 million Canadian dollars. And here is the link. The nice thing about his web site is that he runs it by himself. So after he paid the web-hosting, and other service fees, he can put the money into his own pocket (after paying tax). Certainlly this is a very rare case. Also don’t think he built the web site and the business overnight, as a matter of fact, I believe he has done this for more than 3 years. [...]

[...] Read this It amazes me to think that my 1 person company is able to compete at a level where all the competitors have 600+ servers, and 300+ full time staff. I feel like I am ahead of my time, and when I look around at the companies out there today I have a hard time seeing them existing in a few years. I believe that in a few years 2 or 3 person companies will replace companies that have 40 or 50 employees. [...]

I’m not sure if I believe this, the word “Google Inc” looks fake, although, this is another fantastic way to get more traffic to your site. I might post that I make 5 grand a day and wonder how much my traffic will increase ? I need more proof ..why doesn’t he show the deposit receipt?

I didn´t believe that Webmasters can earn so much money with Adsense.

He doesn’t really need to prove it to you. If you research how much traffic plentyoffish.com is pulling in, which you can find out in many places, you will see that even if he had pictures of monkies on his site right now, he’s still make a killing with adsense.

It’s amazing living in this day and age how people make lots of money. This Markus Frind guy is brilliant. A complete DIY millionaire and I am sure lots of people want to follow his steps.
His website plentyoffish.com is doing tons of traffic and he’s earning $1,000,000 just by placing adsense advertisements on it.
Let’s take a look and see if anyone can comment on the elements that made his website so popular? Two key elements I would like to discuss:
1. The website’s name: plentyoffish.com
2. The website’s design
Firstly the name of his website plentyoffish.com…Well on the good side, it sounds pretty catchy and has a high chance of people word mouthing it off. But the words plentyoffish itself does not look so good when you type it in the browser url or displayed as an advertisement. Looks a bit funny. lol. Well thats my view.
Secondly, most people have said the design of his website is poor. So in my opinion I would agree. But in terms of user friendlyness, its pretty user friendly and simple to navigate. That’s why users are sticking around.
Let’s see if there would be any design changes on the site soon, keeping in mind the design feedbacks.
As for it becoming a billiondollarwebsites.com webby well I would say may be not…but a hundred million dollars worth may be
Well we’ll just monitor it on my website blog at: http://www.BillionDollarWebsites.com

[...] According to the magazine article, thanks in part to FM and the attention that sites are getting from advertisers, Fark could be looking at $600,000 or so in ad revenue per month pretty soon. According to FM’s site, Fark gets about 5 million uniques a month, which makes it larger than most metropolitan newspapers. And Drew runs it with some help from a couple of tech guys. It reminds me a little of Markus Frind, the little-known web-vertising genius behind the online dating site Plentyoffish.com, which he runs more or less singlehandedly (with some help from his girlfriend) and makes more than $500,000 per month from. The word Google Inc. looks fake, will need more proof to believe anything. Could this be classified as fraud? I’m sure anyone who’s ever recieved a adsense check would be able to confirm that this check is real. Could this be google, promoting their adsense? I hope this forum catches the attention of google’s or reps or directors, to either confirm or deny the check.

Ik heb het idee daarom al eens ingezonden voor een wedstrijd van Bidchallenge maar helaas kwam ik niet door de eerste ronde omdat het project te weinig winstperspectief zou hebben.
