Its taken me a year to go from nowhere to market leader of the mainstream market of the UK, though we are still faaar away from competing with gaydar. Compete.com has shown here that ranking sites in terms of raw uniques is meaningless as it doesn’t represent people actually using the service. The best we can do in the UK is rank sites by visit time * visitors to get a metric for most used.
Gaydar 378.84
Plentyoffish 135.36
Girlsdateforfree 95.7957
Match 73.7555
Friendsreunited 60.295
Loopylove 45.9
datingparents 30.957
I am looking to accelerate growth in the UK even faster and in the next week I’ll will be launching an affiliate program on azoogle and paying $3.00 per registration in the UK. Plentyoffish completely dominates canada and we are starting to go mainstream in the UK and affiliates can help us get there!.
The UK is becoming extremely competitive, with companies like singlesnet, mate1 and others moving into the market quickly and meetic and match.com spending huge amounts of money. And in the last year most of major dating sites in the UK have been sold. The last site to be sold was datingdirect, which has about 5% of the traffic of plentyoffish worldwide for 52.8 million.

It will be interesting to see how you manage fraud in an affiliate program where, I am assuming, sign-ups are still free.

Unless you think this as a loss leader, is it really possible that you can make back that $3 in the lifetime of a user with just ads? (considering the 30% monthly turnover rate!)

Why did you pick Azoogle?
Speaking as someone that’s built numerous affiliate directories in the past, I don’t even count Azoogle as a very significant affiliate network. Hell, I see True.com is their 1 featured dating client but you go to True’s affiliate page and they show a link to Commission Junction. No link to Azoogle at all. lol!!!

It can work. But only if you have some sophisticated fraud detection methods. Otherwise, you will end up with thousands of fake profiles from Cote d’Ivoire or Senegal, stating they are from UK.

It’s obviously not possible for Markus to make any money with this. He is just using it to get a head start in the UK and generate some buzz and some word of mouth referrals. It’s a good idea, if you can afford it (and he obviously can) but I bet his campaign will only have a 1-3 month timeline.
I’m not up on how many users plentyoffish has but just image if you used $3 as the maximum he earned per user on clicks! Crazy!

Markus, where do you buy these reports? Or, are these available for free?

Pay them $20,000 some a year.

The UK is very competive market and culturally very different from the US. Always room for ‘good’ dating sites who aren’t just chasing a fast buck.
Good luck

I think it’s a great idea. I have referred many people (friends) to pof over the years, it’d be nice to be paid for it. And as a relationship columnist and dating author, I should be able to easily send traffic there, much more so that with other no name dating sites.

Very informative post. I especially found your comment that ranking sites by visit time is a better metric than page rank.
March 14, 2009 at 12:36 pm |
I have to say, I can not agree with you in 100%, but it’s just my opinion, which indeed could be wrong.
p.s. You have a very good template . Where did you find it?
