Eharmony drops bookstore and gift certificates.

September 21, 2007

Greetings from the eHarmony Affiliate team.

Recently, we made the decision to discontinue promoting the bookstore product on Commission Junction. This includes Books, Compact Discs and gift certificates. The results from that portion of our program were not as strong as we had hoped and we’d rather have our valued affiliates, like yourself, promoting the areas where you can make the most money.

As we’ve mentioned before, we’ve worked hard to enhance our singles product recently and we have some exciting programs in the works for the remainder of 2007! We look forward to working with you on those to continue to grow your program.

Regarding the Bookstore program, all book, compact disc and gift certificate links will be deactivated from the CJ program as of Friday, October 12th. We ask that you please remove any Bookstore links or banners that are currently live and replace them with those for our Singles product.

Fool.com Tells Eharmony to convert to free.

September 20, 2007

http://www.fool.com/investing/general/2007/09/18/cupid-can-be-stupid.aspx

interesting article,   but in order  for eharmony to Make $200 million dollars a year in advertising revenue as a free site  its got to be 2 times the size of Facebook.com  and have 10 times as many pageviews as the entire dating industry combined does.

Facebook is close to 2 billion pageviews per day  and on course for 100 Million in revenues this year.     Eharmony supposidly makes $200 million year on 13 million pageviews per day.     As you can see from eharmony’s tech spending and Americansingles  Public filings if they converted to free those sites wouldn’t even be able to pay for thier existing tech costs.

Hotornot Converts back to paid.

September 18, 2007

Here is an email Hotornot Sent out saying they are going back to paid because of fake profiles and scammers.

I think its more about money,   as a free site  I earn millions,   as a paid site  I would earn around 100 Million a year given my membership.   I would suspect the game plan is to focus on facebook apps to send traffic to hotornot and then make a lot of money off memberships again.   I can’t see to many free site competitors in the future,   as there is just way more money in being a paid site.

******************************
Dear loyal HOTorNOT star members,Based on feedback we got from many of you, we have decided to start requiring star memberships on HOTorNOT again. While many of you saw how going free would be good, you also warned us that this would probably lead to more spammers and fake profiles.

You were right, this is exactly what happened. The spammers got aggressive to the point where they were screwing up the system, even causing the “someone wants to meet you” emails to not be sent for periods as long as 5 days.

We don’t really regret trying to make the site free so everybody can use it, but it’s clear that most of our users believe an inexpensive paid site works better than a free site filled with spammers.

If you left the site after we went free, we hope you’ll come back and join again. If you are still here, we hope turning subscriptions back on has a noticable impact for you, helping you meet more people without having your time wasted by the spammers.

True.com Going under?

September 18, 2007

Lots and lots of rumors since May about true.com  going under.   Looks like the mainstream media is now picking up on it.   True.com owes advertising companies millions and hasn’t been paying the bills.

http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2007/09/14/is-truecom-being-untrue-to-advertising-partners/

Nothing is more scary for affiliates than promoting a company and seeing it go under without getting paid.    I’m sure this story will hurt make some affiliate marketers run.

Big Boats.

September 13, 2007

Every morning  there is some mega yacht parked at the marina when I look out the window in the morning.    Normally its the monster Yacht Attessa  but this week its the Laurel.

Laurel  is supposidly worth 180 Million Canadian and is 240 feet long.

The Hive.

September 11, 2007

Seems like thehive,  the parent company of singlesnet has been busy lately.    Its a little disapointing to see the entire dating industry becoming a sort of a cross between a Porn Site and Social networking.

Singlesnet’s  latest advertising campaigns are starting off where True.com left off.  Any major dating sites not running porn like ads?

Though in singlesnet defence,  they have all but won the Paid Dating site wars in the US.  Give it another year and match.com and yahoo will show a lot sharper declines then they have this year.

Looks like its game over for adsense.  Once  integrated into  YPN yahoo will leapfrog google in monetization.
