Seems like thehive, the parent company of singlesnet has been busy lately. Its a little disapointing to see the entire dating industry becoming a sort of a cross between a Porn Site and Social networking.
Singlesnet’s latest advertising campaigns are starting off where True.com left off. Any major dating sites not running porn like ads?
Though in singlesnet defence, they have all but won the Paid Dating site wars in the US. Give it another year and match.com and yahoo will show a lot sharper declines then they have this year.

Does it make me want to click? Yes.
Do I believe there are naked women waiting for me on the other end? No.
End result = continue browsing PlentyOfFish.com!

lol…they are already showing the “better” half….so no ” i don’t wanna see the other half” lol just kidding
Hey Markus: I saw your post the other day on having trouble to getting 128GB Opterons to work….I found something:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816152042
It’s almost brand new. for 2000 bux…much better pricing than the Sun Fire X4200s(although X4200 is a 8 way with 4 memory slots per CPU slot), the Tyan GT26 is a 4 way with 8 memory slots per CPU.
Given the Barcelonas were launched yesterday, 4 2Ghz Barcelonas will give you 16 cores and 128GB of ram. Problem solved

i forgot to add…it’s amazing they can managed to put all that in a 1U case.

sorry Correction: Sun Fire X4600s.
Picture of the motherboard that’s used in the Tyan GT26: TYAN S4987WG2NR

Unfortunately TS 4 socket Opterons are almost 3x the price of 2 socket Opterons and the price of 4GB RAM modules is exorbitant.. it simply does not do the math if you can have multiple cheap dual socket servers with 4 to 8 GB of ram. Most effective way of doing business is having beowulf style servers, yes they take extra space but they are much much cheaper than hi-end machines.

trust me its cheaper to have the DB run on as few database servers as possible in the long run. Even if it costs an arm and a leg to buy the servers.

sb,
Sounds like Cloud Creek Systems sold eHarmony their biggest and most of expensive solution (Oh well, they have money to burn). I worked for Cisco in the ’90s. If I remeber correctly, they had 4 TB of data back then. That was like 8-9 years ago on Oracle. It was considered huge at the time, but not any more. And a couple years from now, all these numbers will sound small. I think Markus is on the right track, trying to keep data restricted to as few servers as possible. I think a lot of scaling issues can be countered in the next few years with the brute force of Moore’s Law alone.

I agree Markus, its sad to see the dating industry reduced to semi-porn sites. Although this marketing strategy shown by that above ad is effective for men, I wonder how many women are turned off by it, as its reduces them to a a sexual object instead of a human being with more than a physical appearance. In my personal life, I know alot of females that are discusted by those types of ads…
Wouldn’t it be worth a dating sites while to instead target women to join, with ads appealing to them. Men will simply follow soon enough… Now on the other point, I don’t mind how dating sites are slowing converging towards social networking sites, but I can see how this blurs the lines between social networking and dating. This bluring of lines, is a threat to you and other dating sites unless you conform. Do you agree with that last line?

Reducing advertising for internet dating sites to the level of little more than pornography is foolish and short-sighted of the company.
This may get the MEN to sign up to the sites, hoping for a fantasy full-filled. It gives the companies money right now. Their growth will stop, as men realize the quality ladies are no longer signing up. The numbers for available women will decline.
I have been internet dating for a while. I have noticed the quality of the contacts diminish over time. They used to be sincere, respectful and romantic. Now, it seems to be little more than shopping for your next sex partner, no relationship wanted or needed.
Internet dating has always had a stigma as being for those who couldn’t find a mate in real life. This is just changing the reason for the ’stigma’.
But hey, in this day and age, business is conducted with an eye to this quarter’s bottom line. It’s more important than building a quality reputation that lasts.

I think the ads work great but when you actually click it, it usually puts you off

It’s a number game. Just like insurance (other sales), the more men they get to sign up (unawares) the more $$$ they make. They aren’t in it to make matches, they are in it to sell subscriptions.
As some have mentioned, serious daters use plentyoffish or eHarmony.
