Zoosk Raising 50 million?

Former employee says  zoosk is raising 50 million.   The market is insane right now i’ve never seen so much dealmaking going on behind the scenes as i do now.

More info on OKcupid,  revenue in 2007 was 1 Million,  in 2008  they wanted to reach 2 million but never made it.

Pageviews  on okcupid doubled between 2008 and 2010  so i’d estimate  2010 revenues at around $4 million.

http://www.quantcast.com/okcupid.com      This is also what renub research projected for okcupid.  They did projections for all the major players.

Interesting how much things have changed in 2 years.    2 Years ago pof had no employees and nearly all of our revenue was from adsense.    Now adsense is under 5% of revenues and falling.   2 years from now the dating space is going to be totally different again especially for free sites.

What do you mean that dating will be different for free sites?

  2. MikeN Says:

Are you kidding? I get more action on facebook than I have on POF!

  3. Harry Says:

So what are you doing to do Markus?

  4. Tor Says:

All dating sites are shit holes. I would never date some off a dating site. There’s a reason people hide from the real world. Overweight, druggies, people who ego problems. The longer you stick around the worse it gets.

  5. John Says:

Markus, what do you think of Zoosk’s run rate of $90m? What are they doing?

I guess the $40m in VC cash helps but there has to be more to this than the TV ads driving traffic and I am guessing they are converting that traffic to paid members? Thoughts?

  6. NotTellinYou Says:

How will dating be different? I mean POF hasn’t had a decent UI update in years! The ONLY reason it has grown and thrived is because it’s FREE while others overcharge. Using POF is like using a web site from 2001.

  7. Anon Says:

    @NotTellinYou

You are right. POF’s UI – the whole user experience – is *horrible*. You would thing they would at least be able to hire a web designer with that 10m a year they get.

And they send you “customer care” e-mails which are actually “customer annoyance emails”. With no way to turn them off. Markus I hope you’re reading this because your sire *really* needs a makeover.

The UI may not be great but the site gets plenty of traffic so I think you have to ask yourself, does the UI design really matter at this point?

  9. Christian Rodriguez Says:

I’m curious – where’s the rev come from? On-site advertising? What are the other rev streams?

  10. jeff Says:

As long as free dating sites continue to get hacked and lose all of their member data only to have it resold to others like it sounds like you did at plentyoffish.com i would expect match.com and other paid sites to continue to grow

  11. Toby Says:

Smartdate also received lots of funding – same es Flirtomatic.
Cupid Plc for example went to the stock market – which seemed to be worthwhile when looking at the stocks.

  12. jeff Says:

POF has been hacked again, I wonder if they have noticed yet lol
Come on Markus stop screwing around and fix the site.

  13. Dater Says:

OkCupid has a ton of “street cred” but still no self-serve advertising platform. I wonder when that’s coming along, and if it’s cause for concern for PoF?

Speaking of music videos…I know you can pay vips for blogging about a product. But how much does it cost to sponsor a music video?

If adsense dropped to < 5%, where does revenue come from now. And how will it change in the future?
