In the last year POF has gone from having no mobile apps to 3 Billion pageviews a month on apps & 300 million visits and our mobile traffic continues to grow at 3% a week. In comparison the website has been around since 2003 and only has 160 Million visits a month and 4 billion pageviews. To give a sense of how quickly mobile is taking over online dating 40% of our signups are now via a mobile device in the US up from under 10% at the start of last year. Ipad usage grew 88% in one month from December 2011 to Jan 2012.
Now its great to have all this traffic, the only problem is now one has figured out how to make similar levels of money on mobile as the web, unless you do some real scammy stuff. So ya its great to have more traffic on mobile than every other dating app combined in english speaking countries but it doesn’t matter much if you can’t really monetize it at high levels and it starts to canabilize your web traffic. Given our current growth POF is probably going to be 60-70% mobile by the end of the year. Now most people think that mobile is just for young people, that is simply not true, we are already majority mobile for 30-40 year olds in the US and in a few months 40-50 is going to be majority mobile in the US.

40% of signups on mobile is simply HUGE. It’s hard to believe the growth is as fast in only 1 year. Tablets should be the big up.
It would be interesting to know on this 40% how many are from tablets vs smartphones ?

30-50 year olds ARE de facto rather young these days.
Really young people, as you put it, and was probably referring to 15-25 year olds, doesn’t have to use POF, or any other dating site either for that matter.

Have you thought of introducing more premium features for mobile users that they have to subscribe to use?
For example, you could further refine the location based matching service and offer this to users for a fee along with other location based extras.
These tools only really work on mobile, and the massive success of apps like Badoo show that they do work and bring in revenue.
Combining their business model with your customer database, could prove to be very lucrative.

The problem with advertising on mobile is that it’s harder to get those same users to convert, the same way they would on a pc. I am however finding that traffic does convert but you really need to play around with it to get it just perfect. Also it’s hard to find lots of product that will work on mobile at the moment. Just growing pains I guess. It was probably the same thing when the internet was introduced in the 90s. How do we make money from the web? Lol, that worked out ok…

I think of it from another perspective: granted while you may lose PC users to the phone, you may well have lost them altogether had you made no mobile-friendly version. They presumably take less bandwidth (I know, not your biggest concern) and I’d suspect most of them use it when they’re away from the computer to stay connected but come home and use it from their PCs. It enhances their engagement. It’s being Coke: work your way in so you’re an ever-present force in the background of their daily lives
