Orkut #2 site in India.

I was a little surprised to see the Orkut is the  number 2 site in India,  maybe it will become the number 1 site like it has in Brazil.

The interesting thing about india is it has 350 million english speaking users,  when I launched my site in 2003 it had explosive growth in India,  the only problem was that In a short time I signed up over 60,000 men and 1500 women,  an extremely large percentage of messages from the indian men where about sex…   I ended up blocking the entire country because you just can’t create a business out of that for many reasons, not the least of which is the ratio of men to women.   Also they would have ended up destroying the entire site.   Dating is a very local thing and hard to export/impose a western culture.  In India the matrimonial sites are seeing insane growth as a result Jeevansathi.com  IPO’ed today and Shaadi.com plans to IPO soon as well.

My experience is that for Indians social networking/dating  is treated as a form of porn.
It is no surprise that not many social networks there and no dating sites dare venture there.
Exporting social networking/dating  other other countries results in culture clashes,  I wonder what it is about  Orkut that makes it so successful in places where others fail.

The reason orkut is so popular is it allows you to keep in touch with your friends. This is a group of people who knows you. On the other hand dating lets you connect with strangers.

All communication on orkut is public. People will always behave better in public. Think about what would happen if you write something nasty to someone, and that person tells some of your friends what you did.

Because communication is open for everyone to see, it is self regulatory.

  2. dn Says:

The reason for such a skewed ratio is that more than 50% of the girls in India are married off by the time they are 18 and 90%by the time they are 24 . They are too busy with household work to waste time on frivolous activities like networking.

Markus, what about the dating world in the UK? What are your thoughts on that?

Interesting post, I’d tend to agree. Nice comments dn, sounds spot on!

  6. Manish Says:

In Indian females, we are talking about those who can access internet and are interested in dating.

In India, Normal marriage age of such girls is 25 if not less. I guess, culture is more to blame here.

  7. Harshad Joshi Says:

Yeah, its true. Indians dont like to use myspace more.

  8. ak Says:

wow alot of assumptions being made about Indians in this post and I dont agree with any of it espeically the last statement about dating sites being porn sites for indians.

  9. a.m. Says:

Why is everyone so quick to make these assumptions about Indians? Most of you must be male. Yes it is true more men use dating sites than women, but think about the percentage of men who are using the sites for a genuine purpose and the percentage that are just sleeze-bags on the internet. Sites like Friendster, MySpace and Hi5 have an overwhelming number of Indian users — from India and abroad. Many Indian youth are restricted from meeting new people and being as social as people from other nationalities. Muslim youth experience this on an even larger scale and so they dominate a lot of these sites, as well. Females tend less to go surfing around for guys and generally let guys spot them first. It’s like the traditional way of boy meets girl and the whole friendship, courting, etc — except it’s all online. I believe a lot of Indian women feel safer meeting people online first and getting to know someone before meeting in person. This is because both parties can enjoy getting to know one another in a more private manner. There is no risk of the tedious stuff like: getting dressed, being nervous, going on a date, awkward silence, bombing a date, never hearing back from your date, superficial judgements.. not to mention a guy has to spend money to take a girl out a few times and it’s such a waste of time and money when it doesn’t work out. Online, conversations flow freely and people feel comfortable behind their screen. Online, you can always delete a contact or block a contact. Personality is focused on much more in online dating. When two people finally meet, they already know so much about one another and chances are it will work out. If not — and two people have been chatting and felt even a little connection — maybe a new friend was made If not, there is far less detachment involved in online conversing.

I guess Indians have grown accustomed to forums/blogs now and since they love to “want to be friends” orkut has become popular.

callinglife.com is another site which i think can be potential threat to orkut in some time . i m observing this site for last some day , it is growing very fast . some features on this site is realy good . other than this callinglife also provide user to serach within the city , this is unique feature about this one

  11. Lord Brar Says:

I can very well tell from my experience that Orkut is not really a way to make new friends here or find a date online but rather a way to keep in touch with your old friends. I got hooked there because I found friends from my high school who I could never imagine I’d meet again in life!!! The same happens when you meet your old colleagues.

  12. PULSE 2.0 » Blog Archive » Google’s Mobile Revolution Starts in India? Says:

[…] Google’s Mobile Revolution Starts in India? Tuesday, December 5th, 2006 Pulse 2.0 Team Google (NASDAQ: GOOG) has been making moves to place videos upload on YouTube available via mobile devices through a deal with Verizon. This made us wonder what else Google may be planning in their mobile division. This past Friday (Dec 1, 2006) Google and AirTel announced a strategic partnership. Airtel is the leading GSM cellphone service provider in India with over 28 million mobile customers. What makes this interesting is that Orkut, the same social network which failed to take hold in the United States, has been gaining traction in India rapidly. […]

  13. Fahed Says:

That’s a really stupid comment on Indians using Social Networking Sites primarily to access form or as a mode of adult hookups.
That’s ridiculous. It is a very immature statement. I am an Indian myself. I use orkut to keep in touch with friends in my city. It enabled me to get in touch with lost friends whom i used to interact with on a daily basis in my schooldays. That’s the power of orkut. Off Course I do not deny that it has porn communities and dating communities, but that’s just a part and parcel of every society. As a matter of fact, USA and European countries have more porn web sites and porn surfers. We do not get to surf porn because of joint family system and less privacy. A PC is ideally shared by the entire family here with the same username on XP many a times.

I think Orkut has beaten Myspace hands down and It is now, perhaps the largest social networking site in the world. Thanks to Brazil, USA and India who together comprise more than 80% of Orkut Users.

  28. Kartika Says:

well Markus……its obvious that u didn’t find any good friends in orkut….

Do not specify totally as “INDIANS” coz u can’t blame a whole country for some rubbish people living there…..every country has its own dark side….

next time if u create an orkut account, try to find people who are decent and friendly…..u will then know why orkut is so famous….

  29. Indian Says:

I quit using the Yahoo Messenger chatrooms because of those cam girls who keep sending me messages through bots. Alas! Chatrooms were THE favorite rooms for me. And I don’t even enter any country’s chatroom. I either go to India’s or an International one! Don’t even dare say that India has caused trouble through porn. Someone please stop those porn industries in USA/UK so that I could go to the rooms and make some friends. I love interacting with people from all over the globe.
