Plentyoffish Self Service Advertising Platform.

In the next half hour we will start serving ads from our own self service advertising platform  located at  ads.pof.com   Our ads are in the same format as the facebook ads so it should be pretty easy for advertisers to use the same format.

We are different from nearly every other ad platform.    Instead of guessing at who your ads will reach you can target based on zip code, age, gender, ethnicity, income, education, profession,  if a user drinks, smokes   etc etc.

This first version of our system is meant for advanced users,   as we have many sophisticated advertisers spending 50k+ a month with us and we wanted to move them over as fast as possible and give them as many targeting options as possible.      Our next version will be more targeted towards local advertisers  who don’t need a million and one targeting options and just want to reach people within a 5-10 mile radius of their business.     You can advertise locally now,  but if you have never used online advertising it will seem alien.

If I use the Mozilla Firefox with Adblock Plus addon I do not see ANY ads at PlentyofFish.

What will happen if all users decide to browse PlentyofFish with Mozilla Firefox with Adblock Plus addon?

  3. Aris Says:

Does this support targeting by country?

What about keywords in any other text the customer might have entered?

  4. Ashish Says:

Hmm, I don’t see the page. Has it been taken down or is it just me?

  5. Robert Says:

What is the support contact email for POF ads? I’m having a billing issue, my credit card was charged $200 (2 charges of $100), but the money hasn’t been credited to my POF account.

Here’s a screenshot of the charges (http://imgur.com/brnwF.jpg), please advise. I’m excited to start running ads on POF!

  6. Dan Says:

In the help section, it says that your new platform supports ads that are 728x90px, however in the preview the ad looks smooched? Does it just look like that in the preview or is 728×90 not supported?

  7. dave Says:

whats up am i going to have to call my cc company and do charge back. I have been charged (even though got error message from site when processing) but yet my account balance shows 0. what is contact email or phone number this is crazy….. giving it 1 day before call cc company for charge back.

  8. Robert Says:

I am in the same situation as dave, please get us a phone number or email address to contact. Or better, just credit our advertising accounts with the money we paid. Thanks.

  9. Joe Says:

In my neighborhood many of the big chain retailers like Wal-mart, Costco, Kroger, etc have band together and started their own ad delivery service ran than individually send ads to people’s homes using the USPS postal services.. They package all their weekly paper ads together and hired some third party service to deliver all of them in one-fell-swoop and this is far more cost effective than each of them spending anywhere from 50cents to upwards of a dollar or more to deliver the ads via the government postal service..

Google is spreading itself too thin these days..The GOOG stock is still severely overvalued and totally disconnected from fundamentals of reality.. The average joe is too dumb and too lazy to install adblock and noscript extensions on firefox (heck even Chrome 4.0 supports extensions and adblocking now..) but for Google it will never even need to come to that..

Google is and has always been a complete “blackbox”.. Which is highly ironic given that they want to know what everyone else is doing.. Their adsense and adwords models cannot be sustained for too much longer.. Online advertisements are propped up by consumer spending, and essentially all our “free” services like google wave, google voice, gmail, youtube, etc are subsidized by the substrate of a healthy economy..

Google not only ultimately devalues everything it touches (see Google Books, Google Editions, etc) but also is it a content aggregation in the extreme in that Google is the ultimate middle man’s middle man, reaping the highest benefits for doing the least amount of work..

There is no such thing as a free lunch.. even with G’s large economies of scale – the many free services that we enjoy are directly coming from the pockets of the advertisers and the margins of the sites that utilize adsense.. Now in today’s economy and the current trends adsense is not really making nearly as much money as it used to, partially because advertisers aren’t willing to pay that much for keywords and clicks as compared in the past, and partially because Google has gotten more greedy and keeping more and more revenue to itself and sharing less and less.. (it does have a stock, shareholder to appease…)

The point of all this is, many larger sites (such as POF) realize they can do it better themselves rather than going with Google the middle man that eats away at more than 60% of the revenues that could potentially come from display of adds..

Perhaps if more and more large POF similar sites (not necessarily dating) switched to a hybrid model or dumped google altogether they could team up and create an independent nonprofit advertising federation (think hulu and fox, abc, nbc, though hulu is not nonprofit) whos sole purpose would be to profit the maximum margins for advertisers by staying lean, efficient, and dedicated to only a few specialized tasks.. Google on the other hand is no longer lean, efficient or dedicated anymore..

When all the big fish jump off adsense and either go it alone or do some kind of cooperation that will leave Google with only the little crumbs (many many tiny sites) to pick up the pieces.. It will cause a vicious cycle where the little sites get paid even less than they do now and when they reach the point of negative real returns (more time and energy put into the site than ad moneys are worth) natural selection and self interest will dictate the death and failure of the adsense model..

Of course Google can still advertise on their jumping board/onramp of an internet search engine and their own web real estates properties like gmail, youtube, blogger, etc.. but that is FAR less a significant share of the web than having being on nearly 60% of all major internet websites that employ some method of ads for revenue ..

This is why google is a arrogant bubble and in the long run it will not survive..

  10. Joe Says:

What you said would be absolutely true – if it weren’t for Google making the /vast/ majority of their money from search ads on their own search engine, and not the content network.

  11. F Says:

most money is made by those that “shuffle” money…google is the ultimate middle man and that won’t change anytime soon…their search engine drives the clicks and the clicks will drive the ad revenue…

“Joe” with the long post: you can complain the free google offerings is on the backs of advertisers, but that’s how this has evolved…

if it wasn’t for tech, we’d still be paying $20 for a bloody tape cassette!

Google is only going to get stronger…

i do agree that ad blocks may hurt the industry, BUT look what the mobile phone industry did when the TRUTH came out about mobile phone’s radiation that can cause major problems… the industry squashed it…

  12. Robert Says:

Just an update, I was contacted by POF and the issue was fixed. Thanks.

  13. eric Says:

  14. Matt Huggins Says:

I ran into an issue with POF ads, and I need to get in touch. I am unable to find contact information for support anywhere. Please advise so I do not have to dispute a charge with my credit card company.

  15. Barb Elgin, MSW, LCSW Says:

  17. Duncan Says:

It’s cool you’ve written your own adserver, but watch your back. The operational overhead can soon become overwhelming as requirements creep. Giving advertisers a great selection of targeting is great; letting them run riot with rich media creatives isn’t. Another thing that can begin to be a burden is doing your own tracking of views and clicks. We had a whole separate database for just that and, hilariously, ended up with integer rollover errors frequently. We moved to summarising less frequently, using our hadoop farm, which works better, but we have the overhead of fixing those offline jobs when they break for one reason or another. Further, as things get bigger and you scale up, it becomes less and less possible to do all your adserving logic on each pageload, so you cache the hell out of it and that introduces a boatload more complexity.

I hope it works out better for you. Alternatively, there’s DART etc. You loose some £££s, but save yourself from writing an adserver instead of a website.

  18. Daniel Stockton Says:

    This is great stuff.

    Quick suggestion:

Trafficspaces has an free self serve ad solution that does targeting on gender, age range, education, profession, interest, relationship status etc.

It also allows you to authorize then charge later rather than charging advertisers immediately then suffering a chargeback. Really useful for all those dodgy advertisers out there.

  22. Pick Up Girls Says:

I wouldn’t mind advertising with POF. Ive used it numerous times for Online dating but i might look into it for web traffic.

  23. Stan the man Says:

I agree with Joe (above with the long post).

Google is very arrogant and operates like a black box.
I paid in $500 a week ago, yet they haven’t approved or rejected my ads.
My money is just sitting with them, earning no interest.

In contrast, when I uploaded a test ad on POF, I got a response within minutes.

Personalized self service ad platforms rule.
What is more? Site owners know their users better than Google can.
That’s why POF, Facebook etc can let us reach ppl accurately by gender, income, interests etc.

    Go POF!

    Update:
Anyone that wants a free, plug and play version of what POF has done, check out these guys:

  27. Neil Says:

    Hey,

I should try using POF advertising self service to market my services. I usually use ZEDO Ad Network Self Service. This was suggested by one of my friend. The interface is simple and the best thing is that it gives me good CTR for my ads.

  29. Dallas Dater Says:

I just signed up. Since, I own a dating site. I figured POF would bea great place to begin an ad campaign, considering all traffic is interested in dating. Now I have to begin split testing ads. Check it out! http://dating.dallasnightlyfe.com

  30. Fish Killer Says:

Hey Marcus what are you doing about the serial killer on your fish site that has been killing women. How is it that its not all over the place yet. Your system sucks and it can not stay free forever. You will be forced to charge a fee to stop these maniacs from killing again. I recommend a paid service. Marcus is only init for the money the ads provide for him. I have met marcus in person years back and he really needs to do something before he finds himself in a bad place.

  31. Johnny5o Says:

The Ninth Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals recently ruled that a business must use its domain name to sell goods or services in order to protect the name — even if a competitor starts to use the name after you registered the domain.

  32. Maria Says:

Why nobody see illigability of this website. Any discriminations of this website should be looking by very interesting in that Legal organizatrions and this website made offense on users with their limited view. Also, this website make a lot of money that not everybody knows. This “poor” M make criminal to be free and he has or his companions gave limits to none criminal.
I’ll name this website Plentyoffish as a fact for good investigations. Thank you.

  33. Mat Says:

I’m new to POF Advertising so may have this wrong, but…

I’m annoyed by the fact that – unless I register with POF as someone looking to ‘date’ – it seems that (as a registered POF Advertiser) I can’t view the site in the same way as the ‘dating community’ who are using it to look for (lets call it) ‘love’.

Has anyone found a way to see other advertiser’s ads on POF, without signing-up in the same way as someone looking for ‘romance’?

I want to know what kind of ads I’m competing with and to get ideas for my own ads. However, I’m a married guy and don’t want my wife’s lawyers on my back, accusing me of a planned infidelity.

How do I get technical support for the PoF Ad platform?

I opened an account for advertising yesterday and now my username and password are not working. I even tried “forgot password”, but the site is telling me my email is not linked to an account.

I’m extremely frustrated as there is absolutely no contact/help info for technical support.
